Types of Heat Treating

Induction

Over the years Chem-Plate Industries has developed an excellent reputation in our region for high quality, on-time work – all at competitive prices.

Chem-Plate Industries currently has four automatic induction lines capable of handling fasteners as large as M14 and as small as M4 in diameter.

Induction hardening is a metal heat treatment process that utilizes a controllable and localized method of heat without contact with the metal parts or components being heated. The heat is generated by inducing an electromagnetic field of a current to the object being heated. This provides very economical, rapid, and targeted heat treating of metal materials. This process is commonly used in products such as self-tapping screws.

Neutral Harden

Through hardening, also referred to as “Neutral and temper”, is a process typically done by heating the steel above the critical temperature and holding for a period of time long enough, so the internal structure completely transforms to austenite, then cooling it rapidly by submerging parts in an Oil Quench Media.

During this process, steel parts will undergo changes in their mechanical properties and as a result, parts will have increased hardness and strength, but the brittleness increases too simultaneously. Therefore, a Tempering process will follow after hardening to obtain specific values of mechanical properties and to relieve internal stresses and Brittleness induced during the hardening process.

Case Harden

Carburizing is a type of hardening process particularly done in a carbon enriched endothermic atmosphere suited for components that need a thorough hardening core with a harder surface layer, this is accomplished by diffusing carbon into the surface of low carbon steels to increase the carbon content to sufficient levels so that the surface will respond to heat treatment and produce a hard and wear-resistant layer.

Carbonitride is a modified version of gas carburizing where ammonia is added to the endothermic atmosphere suitable for plain low-carbon steels that will not achieve a uniform case hardening in gas carburizing. Carbonitride is ideal for producing a thin high hardness case layer that gives the part an improved resistance to wear.
